Childcare Experience and Qualifications

For those wanting to work in early years settings it is a requirement that they register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) within the required timescale. If an applicant holds a relevant childcare-related qualification that is recognised by the SSSC, he or she will be registered as a practitioner under the appropriate part of the register.

If an applicant does not hold a relevant recognised qualification, they will be registered as a support worker and required to complete a qualification within a timescale set by the SSSC, usually 3-5 years. A support worker can still work within a childcare setting for this time while working towards their qualification.  Early Years services can request a qualified practitioner or a support worker when they need a permanent or temporary worker.
